Internships

UMass Press is thrilled to enhance student experiences by offering internships in three departments: Acquisitions, Marketing, and EDP (Editorial, Design, & Production).

Acquisitions

We offer an internship to advanced graduate students that is co-sponsored by the Graduate School, College of Humanities and Fine Arts, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. For more information, please see this page (scroll down): https://www.umass.edu/graduate/professional-development/practice-your-skills-and-expand-your-possibilities

EDP (Editorial, Design, & Production)

During the Fall and Spring semesters, we offer undergraduate internships in our Editorial, Design, and Production (a.k.a. EDP) department. These internships are for all-round helpers/assistants within the EDP department of a book publisher. The positions call on a lot of different abilities.

Intern duties could involve any of the following tasks: General office work, editorial assistance, digital publishing tasks, graphic design, desktop publishing, and documentation.

The positions require familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and other Creative Suite software.

Students who are interested should email a cover letter and resume to our EDP manager, Sally Nichols, at [email protected]

Marketing

During the Fall and Spring semesters, we offer undergraduate internships in marketing, with students choosing a focus on either digital marketing or operations.

Digital marketing interns will assist in development of strategies and content for email marketing, social media marketing, and the UMass Press website, as well as other initiatives. Digital marketing interns may also write press releases, conduct media research, and interview authors for our blog and/or podcast.

The operations track is perfect for students who want to hone their professional writing skills. Operations interns will primarily be creating documentation for task processes, workflow, strategy, and various reporting as well as assisting with market research, data entry, and information processing, as well as potentially writing press releases.

Both marketing positions require strong writing skills, attention to detail, an interest in book publishing, and experience navigating various systems and learning new platforms. Digital marketing interns who have experience with Canva, Hootsuite, Constant Contact, or WordPress are preferred; however, those skills are not required for consideration.

Students who are interested in applying for a marketing internship should send a cover letter and resume to our Marketing & Sales Manager, Chelsey Harris, at [email protected]. If you are not sure which focus is right for you, send a cover letter and express what interests you about each one. No need to apply twice. Please note that marketing internships are offered as a remote opportunity, but student interns are welcome to use office space at the press.
