Please join the University of Massachusetts Press for a book talk from Scott Bane, author of A Union Like Ours: The Love Story of F. O. Matthiessen and Russell Cheney, which is out now from UMass Press’s Bright Leaf imprint.

The book follows the private lives and public careers of Matthiessen, who was a Harvard professor, famed literary scholar, and activist, and Cheney, a well-regarded artist, over the expanse of decades. Situating the remarkable story of their relationship in the context of shifting social dynamics in the United States, Bane offers a window into the realities faced by same-sex couples in New England in the early twentieth century.

Scott Bane is a program officer at The John A. Hartford Foundation. His essays, fiction, and journalism have appeared in a number of print and online publications, including The New England Journal of History, The Gay & Lesbian Review, and Poets & Writers, among many others.
